Contemporary Abstract Bird Painting "Raven Totem 2" by Colorado Artist Nancee Jean Busse

Raven Totem 2, Acrylic on Canvas mounted on Gatorboard, 40x30. This is my second big raven totem painting. I began the first as a way to use up old paint on my palette and scraps of linen that I didn't feel like stretching. I fell in love with allowing myself to paint with more imagination and zero stress. These paintings don't have to look like anything other than what they are. Plus, for me, Raven has powerful magic.

Wildlife Painting,Pelicans, Snake River “Pelican Pair at Oxbow Bend” by Colorado Artist Nancee Jean Busse, Painter of the American West

Most American artists and photographers know that Oxbow Bend on the Snake River in Grand Teton National Park is breathtakingly beautiful. It also provides a spectacular opportunity for wildlife viewing. This pair of pelicans was perfectly highlighted in a deeply shaded spot along the bank. My photograph of them was surprisingly good (I'm a lousy photographer--always clicking the shutter a fraction of a second too late) and working on this painting was really, really, fun.

Still Life Flower Painting "Glad" by Colorado Artist Nancee Jean Busse, Painter of the American West

I belong to a local CSA, an organic cooperative farm in my community. Not only do we receive a share of delicious produce each week, we get flowers, too! These gorgeous, elegant gladiolas graced my home for just under a week. I had to paint them! I painted this still life in warm, summertime sunset colors.

Native American Legend Raven Art Painting "Why Raven is Black" by Painter of the American West Nancee Jean Busse

This painting is the 5th painting in a series inspired by Native American legends.
These works bring me back to my illustration roots. I love painting the visual imagery of a    colorful narrative.

Native American legends are colorful and full of life and the natural world.
I paint these uniformly: all are the 36x24 and all are painted on Yupo mounted to gatorboard.  I love indulging my love of detail and "close work.

The legend that inspired this painting is retold  HERE

Native American Art,Western Landscape, Teepee Painting "THE STORYTELLER" by Colorado Artist Nancee Jean Busse, Painter of the American West

In this painting there are 2 storytellers: the me-the-artist and the child in the glowing teepee. Both of us are spinning yarns. The child brings the sandhill cranes to life with the enthusiasm of her tall tale. I'm telling a tall tale about the power and magic of imagination and the spoken word. I had a story I wanted to tell with this painting. I remember how I loved stories as a child, listening to them and telling them. BIG stories with fantastic elements and plenty of fabrication! In The Storyteller, the power of a young child's spoken words bring the sandhill cranes to life. They exist first on the teepee as a graphic element and then burst into the starry night sky, real and full of life!

Contemporary Western Art ,Equine Painting "SITTING BULL'S DANCING HORSE" by Colorado Landscape Artist Nancee Jean Busse

Fourth in my Native American Folklore series

This tale is true.

In the 1880s Sitting Bull joined Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show. He traveled all over the country and saw many things, but wearied of the white man’s ways. He went back to the Standing Rock Reservation in North Dakota to be with his Hunkpapa people. Before he left the Wild West Show, Buffalo Bill gifted him with his favorite show horse which could do many tricks..........Read more HERE

Contemporary Abstract Bird Painting "Bird Totem 1" by Colorado Artist Nancee Jean Busse, Painter of the American West

I was painting bird after bird for an upcoming show with a sandhill crane theme and needed a break! I staple-gunned a piece of canvas on to the back of bookcase in my studio and began painting freely. It makes sense that a bird emerged; after all, that's what I had been painting for months. But what also emerged was pure, delightful color. The blues of the sky, the yellows of sunshine, the reds of heart's blood, and violet-y purples of night sky. ALL birds have a totemic quality for me, but this one, part raven, part harpy, and part serpent is a good reminder to look up, be happy, and remember that the world is full of color and the sky full of life.
