© "Harbinger"

Since my work has currently taken on a theme of western ideas, such as my war horses, I felt it was time to offer for the first time out of my own personal collection my acrylic painting named "Harbinger" in it's perfectly complimentary gorgeous professional frame. Originally this painting was going to be the showpiece for my first solo show at the Sweet Earth gallery in Shawnee, OK, but after getting it framed, and hanging it on the wall (what better way to store a painting while you finish the rest for the show?) it fit there so well it stayed.
The first horse I bought when I moved to Oklahoma was a BLM mustang. What a horse I got for my $125.00! I named him Mercury- winged Messenger of the Gods. Under the dirty crust of caked mud and tangled mane and tail was one of the smartest, charismatic, savoy, unafraid, and a true leader with a regal bearing and such a character. I think of him when I see the "Harbinger" painting. At that point in my career as a fine artist I was just taking my first steps into having my work seen in person in a solo show as mentioned above. I had no idea where my art would take me, but I felt there was change coming, and I was excited about that prospect. So "Harbinger" represents the dream and anticipation of an upward direction in honing my style, my techniques, my emotions on canvas.
That mustang on the high vista with his head turned into the wind, with one of his mares just below, will always represent a turning point in my fine art career. I now offer it up to you for the first time, with it's public introduction at the Kasum Contemporary Fine Art gallery in OKC. For info on purchasing go here for "Harbinger"
May the winds of change bring us all better things with which to enrich our lives. Jonelle

© "Masquerade"

Used to be a time when I wore makeup, regularly and especially when I went out to be with friends or on dates. The colors, the lines, the particular way it was applied was an art, simple, but effective. For a very long time now I've been more focused on my assessors, oh how I love my jewelry, especially purple gems and semi-precious stones. By applying these dressings, we change how we look, and it sends a message. How you perceive that message is a personal observation.
Lately my focus on the work I've been doing has been on Indian War painted horses, adorned with feathers and painted symbols on their faces, necks, shoulder and rumps. I use both real symbols traditionally used when Native American War parties were waged, and I have also took the liberty to create my own to suit myself and my message, my feelings, my observation. I'm finding this avenue most enjoyable. The first, and most inspiring, was used with my ever present muse and model Adonis, our gorgeous charismatic Paso Fino stallion. I added the feathers, the war paint, and the costume of changing his rump to be an appaloosa (I love those spots they have!) and realized it was like dressing up to go out on the town, like going to a costume party, and the title "Masquerade" was just perfect. Adonis is my husbands heart horse, he was thrilled with this painting, and it now hangs on the wall in our home, as a gift to my sweetheart for his April birthday. If I saw this in a gallery, I'd be stuck in front of it soaking it all in. Yeah, I like it that much! Hope you do too. No reproductive prints have as yet been offered.

Acceptance. (Wipikidia) Acceptance in human psychology is a person's assent to the reality of a situation, recognizing a process or condition (often a negative or uncomfortable situation) without attempting to change it, protest.

So how do I interpret the meaning of acceptance? I view it as a philosophy of being open minded to the differences in humans ways of life. I know there are other ways of seeing things and doing things than my own, and I try to let it be. I see a growing intolerance for many lately especially in this state that stem from hate, fear, dislike, ego, superiority complex- and I'm dismayed. In this case, I do not have acceptance of the suppression of others. And religion has been the foremost driving factor and reason used to increase the pressure. I like to think I have an open mind, a tolerance, a love and giving viewpoint for others who's choices or personal make-up and lifestyles that aren't the same as mine. Live and let live. When it comes to horses, you can browbeat them into submission or teach them what you want with guidance, and love. I find their acceptance of me has much more meaning and significance when I treat them as feeling, sensitive, intelligent beings and with respect. I pray for the world to become more accepting of others so there is more positive energy, and love to go around.
"Acceptance" is an acrylic on 16"x12"x1.5" gallery wrap canvas. It is available for purchase at $300.00.

April 15th was the last day to turn in taxes. It's a day of many things: relief (they're DONE!!!), angst (how am I going to pay this?), excitement (alright! I'm getting money back!). I finished mine up last month, and paid in for the first time in awhile, but that's just how it is. I chose the acrylic painting "Opera" from my Rhythm and Hooves Series because the emotion expressed can be interpreted several ways. It's meant to imply the booming big voices of the opera singer, but it could be laughter, it could be a scream, it could be a yell. I imagine what you see could be a reflection of your state of mind at the time. I get a smile when I see it, I find it amusing. I hope your tax experience was not bad, and you get some $$$ back to play with, maybe even to invest- in art!

A long time favorite of many I had a love/hate relationship with. Took me three days after I finished it to warm up to it, and that warmth just grew and grew. I had it professionally framed in bright yellow and red which set it off beautifully. Shown, it won high awards. It was my husbands favorite and he requested I keep it to hang for our personal enjoyment for a quite awhile, then I convinced him to let it be sold since he found a new favorite of my work to hang. This vibrant and colorful acrylic painting can be seen for purchase by visiting the Kasum Contemporary Fine Art gallery here
Sometimes life tosses us a curve ball that at first we think is a bad throw, but it's just an angle to get around, not a straight path. I still have trouble getting past some of those angles, but that makes life interesting, don't you think?

© "Blooming Everywhere" SOLD

I can feel it! The world is ready to burst open and come back to life!

There has been days of rain, water puddles everywhere, ponds filled to overflowing, green is showing up, flowers are blooming, trees are budding and some have flowered. Growth, and new life bursting and blooming everywhere! Oh how I love Spring! The color comes back, the sun shines longer, the days get warmer- everything about this time of year delights me! I was even surprised by the appearance of a crocus, I haven't seen one of those bloom in years at my farm.

Do you feel this way too? Is this your favorite time of year? Indeed, each season has it's pros and cons. Along with the warmer weather comes storms, so far the rain has been gentle, but look out, it will get dicey soon here in Oklahoma- but that's a subject for another time. For now I'll just put on my muck boots and who knows, maybe I'll revisit a childhood activity of finding rain runoff and changing the way it flows. Ahhhh..... the simple things, the wonderful things.

© "Gold Leaf"

This painting is an interesting blend of several techniques, uniting acrylic paint with acrylic texture medium for the raised lines and using acrylic spray paints with both positive and negative stencil shapes to make the leaves. I leaned a bit stronger on my scenic painting techniques and style to create this one.
Here where I am (central Oklahoma) there aren't any sugar maple trees like where I grew up in Upstate NY. Their shape is a strong trigger of nostalgia for my years in that area. This painting's bold design and creative use of the negative space brings it all together for a strong finished piece. Lastly, the limited color palette completes the whole concept supporting the idea and the name.
"Gold Leaf" is painted on a 36"x36"x1.5" gallery wrap canvas, and is available at the Kasum Contemporary Fine Art gallery in OKC. Contact Tony for more info here

© "Love Makes the World go Round"

Valentines day has a special meaning to me beyond the obvious, a day to celebrate love. It was in the parking lot of a Hardy's, inside my Toyota truck 25 years ago, that I first kissed my husband. I didn't know that he was bound and determined to have me as his wife, I was just enjoying spending time with him. And here we are, working towards our 14th anniversary later this fall.
The painting showcased here is also the start of a love story. It was commissioned as an engagement gift from the gentleman to his girlfriend. The actual painting has their names painted on the heart, but I kept the image before they were added for my public displaying of the piece. It was very well received and I love the meaning behind the painting- I love carousel horses, and love can make you go around and around and makes you dizzy with stars in your eyes, and it also has up days and it has down days- sort of like the plucking of petals off of a flower. She love me, she loves me not etc. They did end up marrying, she said yes. A happy ending, for them and for me- hurrah!

I am in LOVE with the palomino horse coat color, and the darker and richer the gold, the more I like it. I have a lovely and very sweet paso fino mare I rescued who is wheaten color in winter, but when she sheds out for summer, he coat dapples and deepens considerably to almost being chocolate. This painting was inspired by my coffee one morning, the creamer in it gave it this lovely golden caramel color, and I painted this as a golden palomino paso fino stallion. And I called it "Coffee with Creme". In horse coat color language, the gene that makes the horse golden colored is the creme gene. So there is my fun little word twist to the paintings title. I love doing that too! Painted with acrylic on a standard unframed 24"x20" canvas.

© "Budweiser"

When I went to paint this gelding named Budweiser due to his flashy chrome (white) markings, I had every intention of painting him in my usual way, with lines to express the personality and character of my equine subjects, but this fellow had other ideas. The few starts on canvas of him just weren't right, the energy and flow was lacking. So I stepped back and studied him opening my mind, and there it was- this heart horse was just wanting to be real, there, pure and simple for his owner. The warm oranges emanate the happy, optimistic, bright and honest character of Budweiser, and his gentle yet engaging eyes seem to flow like warm butter into all the cracks in your being. He's beseeching you to just look, connect, and stay in his world.

My usual approach just wasn't the right path to take in this instance, and I had to trust that the feelings I was getting were the way to go. It's not always comfortable to go against the grain of your tried and true way of doing things, but sometimes that difficulty in changing direction is meant to open new options for better results.

A wintery day inspired a nostalgic type painting- of Swirling Spiraling Snow.

This lovely paso fino looks over to the side during a gentle but very cold snow storm, the horse stands covered with flakes on it's body, head and hair, yet is content in the elements. A vaporous steam curls from delicate nostrils into the frosty air. Even though I love the warm weather, I do love snow- I love it's stark beauty, the freshness, stillness and the peace it radiates. Big flakes falling and collecting on surfaces was something I loved to be out in, and this painting makes me think of those times with nostalgia for my growing up and early adult years in Upstate New York. Snow like this is a rarity in Oklahoma where I reside at the time this painting was created.

What do you think about the snow? Do you like it, love it, loathe it? Does snow bring you memories you like to revisit? I could list many wonderful memories from a snowy world. I'd love to hear your stories.

© "Poppy"

This is a revisit to a painting I did awhile ago that was done with the rarer white lines of my signature style. This horse could represent any of the bay paso fino's I've own, and I painted the horse in a field of poppies with the wind sweeping the horses mane, the flowers and the grasses. "Poppy" was one of the paintings in my first solo show and was also the first painting to sell. Sadly there was someone who loved it then, and still does now, that wasn't able to purchase it, and she mentioned this painting the other day. I did not expect that painting to be the first to sell, and because of that, I got the inspiration that horses with flowers was a place I wanted to further explore. Many were done, and there is sure to be more created as time rolls along. On a cold winter night it's nice to feel the warm winds caressing your skin while surrounded by lovely red poppies under the big umbrella of blue summer sky.

© "Fire Run"

Every year that I put together my art calendar collection, I try to have a month or two with a surprise painting not yet released to the public. This year was no different, and I am now introducing this years surprise- "Fire Run".  My signature equine form here has been laid out as a dimensional raised lines and I've used acrylic texture mediums to further give this horse impact and visual interest.

"Fire Run" features a handsome paso fino with bright and contrasting teal and turquoise hair against a rich and vibrant reddish orange atmosphere of a massive blaze. There are three other horses in the background running out towards the main horse and viewer just behind some brush that is also in the cool contrasting blue/greens. There is plenty of energy in this painting, but it is not over the top. Though concerned, the focal horse has a confidence in his eye that lends a feeling of grounded faith, that there is hope, that there is a power to trust in to get through the crisis.

I have a tendancy to panic and/or get wound up when pushed or faced with elements in my life that I can't control- the demanding pressures that I have to deal with occasionally. In that state of inner turmoil and chaos I sometimes forget that there is a higher power that watches over me to give me trust and faith that I will get through it.

I am the type who's nerves can fire off explosievly in stressful situations. How do you handle stress? Are you the leader who can remain calm and take charge reassuring others? Or are you the type like me that needs to be grounded and brought back to rationality?

"Fire Run" has already sold, and will be moving to Canada in 2015. I invite you to sign up for my newsletter to have updates and to stay in touch, find the sign up on my home page www.jonellemccoy.com  Thank you!

© "We Three Kings"

It's Christmas eve when I'm writing this, but I wish you all who see this on December 25th a very Merry Christmas!
What is it you're excited about with Christmas? Santa's arrival? Giving gifts, receiving gifts, family, all the lovely lights and decorations? All or in part? Or is it the celebration of the child king Christ's birth? This painting was done stemming from a memory in my childhood. My father was artistic but didn't pursue it as passionately as I do, but he still showed his talent from time to time. We painted the living room window a couple times with wonderful holiday street scenes and you know who did the carriage horses. Ah, that was so wonderful. But that's not the memory I speak of here. We were Roman Catholics, and a nativity scene was always a part of our decorations. These figurines were set up with the manger in front of a two panel watercolor panorama of the Christmas Star of shining down. That star and it's light has never left my mind. It's part of what makes up my thoughts of Christmas. So here is my memory spoken with my voice. "We Three Kings", three golden horses in a field are bathed in the City of Bethlehem's starlight, and they are well aware of it's beauty. Painted with acrylics on a 12"x16"x1.5" gallery wrap.
Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
