Original Horse and Cowboy Painting "Trust" by Colorado Artist Nancee Jean Busse

It was a long winter. My beloved Dad died, after a difficult final battle. The weather was atypically cold and dreary. The eldercare for both of my parents was, at times, exhausting. During that time, I would look through my photo library for inspiration; any kind of inspiration. I did find inspiration there, in old photos of more lighthearted times, photos of our children when they were young and carefree, bucolic summer vacations, and photos of the wildlife I love so much. There was one particular photo, though, that stood out and I knew it was time to paint my version of it. The photograph depicted an old hand and his horse, at the end of a hard day. Both were weary and ready for rest. The long light of late afternoon shafted across a meadow and illuminated both of them in soft, bright warmth. Their quiet, trusting relationship was evident. At the end of a long, hard day, they had each other.

I attended a rodeo not too long ago and saw these young cowboys sitting on this fence.  It looked to me like they were discussing how they did.  Maybe the guy in the middle has doubts or maybe he is figuring his score.

This pair of draft horses, Percherons, were owned by my Dad.  He loved horses and owned them from a very early age.  Evently he bought these draft horses.  These huge horses are very gentle and very easy to work with.  Dad was asked several times to use them to participate in our towns Christmas parade.  I always thought they are stunning.  This painting is done in Conte' Crayon.

Another painting of my neighbors old barn.  This time in a different view with an ancient oak in the scene.  The time of year was early fall and the air felt good and cool that day.  A great day to be out painting.  The painting is sold.   http://www.ArtworkbyAnn.com

"Desiring Unity" 30"x30"x1.5" textured acrylic- $1450.00

As promised, here is another 60 series inspired piece, this one stems from #41 July 31st which had the two horses and varying colors. This was one of those surprise paintings that developed itself and I fell in love with it, I just knew it had to be explored again larger and in deeper detail. I chose a 30" square gallery wrap canvas and went from there with my line textures, fiber paste and pumice made up the filler on the faces and background.
I don't often paint horses in tandem, but when I have, I've been very pleased. "Desiring Unity" creates a message relating to the rift in our lives that forces wish to keep in place to drive us apart. Separate sticks can be snapped easily, but bundle those sticks and the strength in numbers gives resilience. There are some who understand this, as the bottom horse expresses with the calm and welcoming eyes, and some are scared and unsure, as seen in the top horses eyes. So which will prevail? I personally wish for unity, peace, and equality. "Desiring Unity" priced at $1450.00

Next blog post will be one using the palette of "Eternal Flame", the brick reds and turquoise.

"Eternal Flame" 20"x20"x1.5" textured acrylic- $600.00

The 60 series is over, but it's influence has remained with me. It's challenging to come up with so many paintings in so little a time frame, but I like the playfulness of doing them, and also, the creative stretch and digging deep to tap the well. Several of the paintings really spoke to me once done, and I've already created one large painting I'll be showing soon, but this one I am particularly pleased with, inspired by the series finale #60. The turquoise is so alive and dancing, I felt like I was creating super hot flames. A few names floated around in my head, but I settled on "Eternal Flame". I've added a side by side photo so you can see the comparison of the two. "Eternal Flame" is 20"x20"x1.5" textured acrylic gallery wrap canvas and offered for sale direct from me for $600.00 + shipping.

Next I'll post about another series inspiration that will be shown in NY at an equine festival. That will be in a day or two. Jonelle

Bluebonnet Spring

The Texas Hill Country is absolutely beautiful in the spring.  Bluebonnets abound...!  There are many other flowers in the western Texas Hill Country but bluebonnets dominate.  They just can't help it.  When we drive through the hill country in the spring it is so invigorating, flowers are blooming and folks kinda have a spring in their step.

This is a painting done from a trip to Colorado.  It is beautiful there in the mountains and a different scene comes into view all around you.  Sometimes for me its hard to choose what to paint.  A cowboy fits this painting for me.  Is he following a trail that led into and across the water?  Who or what is he looking for?

Heading'em Home

This western painting was done when the fog is just above the ground and streaks of it are going across the trees, usually early morning.  I wanted to create a sence of stillness and quiet in the scene. The only sounds you hear are the plodding on the horse and the cows.  The birds aren't even chirping yet.  The cows got out of their pasture and the cowboy set out early to look for them and bring them back.  The fog is slowly lifting.  There seems to be a chill in the air.

Horses at Jones' Camp, small art, plein air watercolor, equine art by Louisiana artist Linda T. Snider Ward

A small plein air watercolor of horses near the Jones' Camp. There were at least twenty horses who all had to come up to me to see what I was doing. Once their curiosity was satisfied, they all got down to the business of grazing. It was a lot of fun and challenging trying to capture them on paper, as they moved here and there.

This old barn has been painted by me several times. It is about a 20 minute drive from my home. An older, really slim cowboy owns the place. He owns quite a few cattle and I have had the privilege to to paint them. Only they must have been in the barn, cause I didn't see'em that day. The day was beautiful and bright, great for a western painting.

I painted this little piece of Texas in the Austin, Texas area.  It was late spring and the blooms were just about gone and getting hot that day.  I finished up as far as I thought I could and went back to the studio to cool off with a tall glass of iced tea.

Art by Oklahoma Abstract Contemporary Equine Artist Jonelle T. McCoy

© #53 August 12th 6x8 $68.00

Now we're into the second week in August and getting nearer to the end of the series on the 19th.
I'll be using several varying size of canvas, all gallery wrap, starting with the smallest at 4"x4", to 5"x5", 6"x6", 6"x8", 8"x8", 8"x10", 10"x10", 9"x12", and I might do an 11"x14" if the mood strikes me. This will run for 60 straight days from June 21st. The paintings will be priced according to size and I'll be donating a portion of each sale to 501(c) horse rescue efforts. Shipping is extra determined by size or amount purchased in one shipment. The price list with basic one painting shipping costs are listed at the bottom of this post.
Like last year, I will donate a lump sum from the combined sale of paintings- each buyer will be listed on the receipt of payment for verification. I am no longer taking pre-paid requests. The paintings will come ready to hang.
I'll be posting on all my blogs at varying times throughout the day, but at 6AM pacific time on my personal blogspot, and each days featured painting will be posted on my FB art page and in my website blog God willing. They can sell pretty fast, so be aware it's a first come- first serve basis with payment due upon receipt of invoice via paypal.
