A muse. What is that exactly? The definition I find and like in part is as follows: a woman, or a force personified as a woman, who is the source of inspiration for a creative artist." I kind of like that, a muse has a feminine persona and influence. But, what if the source of my inspiration is of male gender? I still believe it's the intuitive nature of being a woman that shapes it and drives it. My muse is our Paso Fino stallion Adonis. That's not his registered name, but the one we gave him, his barn name. It's unquestionably perfect for him, he is a golden god. The camera loves him, my husband loves him, I love him and my canvases love him. So I'm sharing with you a photo of when we first got him. His mane was partially rubbed out, we didn't even know he had 4 white anklets since he was living in a tiny pen full of mud. His beauty astounded us and he's never failed to make us regret having him. Powerful, yet kind, sensitive, intelligent. Though all male, he is this woman artists muse.

Colorado Mountain Landscape Dog Painting "A Dog You Can Count On" by Colorado Artist Nancee Jean Busse, Painter of the American West

The Meeker Sheepdog Trials is an annual event held in northern Colorado each year. Working Border Collies and their handlers come from all over the world to compete for a grand prize. I painted this for the art competition associated with the event. I love the event and I love border collies!

I don't have a wip update for you again this evening, so here are more of the smalls I have available. These would be great little gifts for the upcoming holidays, who doesn't like that special, one of a kind surprise? For your horse loving spouse, children, family away from home, friends, acquaintances, your barn manager, farrier- the list goes on. These are part of the Summer of 2014 60 series that weren't claimed, and with these, the gift keeps on giving since I donate $8 of each sale to horse rescue efforts. There is some money in the fund waiting to be donated, I'd like to see it grow a bit more to make the money I give go further.  They are all 6x8x1.5 gallery wrap for $68 each + shipping.

WIP of © "Once Again"

I did some more work on once again by adding some texture to the canvas. There is fiber paste for the background and a mix of modeling paste, gel and course pumice on the horses head and neck. After it dried all day, I put in my beginning block of color, the shadows with brown. Since I have such a love affair with the golden horses you can easily guess where I'm going with that. I don't know what I'll do next, but whatever it is, will be the next installment of this wip.

WIP of © "Once Again"

I have had such a positive response to the painting titled encore from my rhythm and hooves series which is great. I have felt an urge to do more and this reaction just fuels my creative fire even more, and I have 2 wip with this technique started. This one will be shown as a wip with several photographs to allow you to see it grow and gain life. I think I'll be calling it "Once Again". I hope you enjoy the process. It's being done with acrylics on a 16"x20"x1.5" gallery wrap canvas, and will be available for sale once completed.

I've been thinking of how to approach doing my horse paintings in a similar fashion to my line style, but by a different technique. I was very happy with how it developed, and turned out to be one of my favorites.I named it "Encore" with the intention to see if I liked this new way of creating my horses and if my fans liked it and wanted to see more, I'd be happy to oblige and do this again. It is SOLD, so indeed, I will do more!

Original Horse and Cowboy Painting "Trust" by Nancee Jean Busse, Painter of the American West

                                                  

It was a long winter. My beloved Dad died, after a difficult final battle. The weather was atypically cold and dreary. The eldercare for both of my parents was, at times, exhausting. During that time, I would look through my photo library for inspiration; any kind of inspiration. I did find inspiration there, in old photos of more lighthearted times, photos of our children when they were young and carefree, bucolic summer vacations, and photos of the wildlife I love so much. There was one particular photo, though, that stood out and I knew it was time to paint my version of it. The photograph depicted an old hand and his horse, at the end of a hard day. Both were weary and ready for rest. The long light of late afternoon shafted across a meadow and illuminated both of them in soft, bright warmth. Their quiet, trusting relationship was evident. At the end of a long, hard day, they had each other.

I had done a small 4 horse painting that I knew someday I'd repeat on a larger scale, and got my chance when a paso fino owner commissioned me to do a 2'x 4' enlargement of that little painting. This was a very satisfying painting to work on, and it was hard to wrap up and send away. Can't hang them all on the walls here though. The little one was titled "Work Together" which was a News Years message, and with the revival and reunion of the 4 horses in the larger painting, I called it "Together Again".

I get comments often that my paintings have a stained glass quality to them. With "Jewel", I emphasized the spaces with varying colors to give the further impression of leaded glass. I loved using all those bright and gorgeous colors to paint this, and felt like I had an array of semi-precious stones as a palette. Done in acrylic. This painting is sold.

Peek at the painting "Opera"

Here's another peek at my music/dance themed set. This one was a challenge I placed on myself to portray the horse from an angle I find difficult to execute. I guess for that reason it's become on of my favorites because I liked how it came out.
