The Colorado National Monument is full of fabulous redrock canyons and rock formations. This formation, called The Kissing Couple, is one of my favorites. I love the brilliant reds, magentas, oranges and purples of the Colorado National Monument!
We live at the foot of the Colorado National Monument. This beautiful summer morning held the promise of rain. I loved the contrast of the sunny canyon walls with the heavy gray clouds behind them.
I was privileged to attend a horse roundup near Kalispell, Montana in June. The horses were beautiful, the landscape was beautiful, the day was beautiful, the whole experience was beautiful! What a fabulous experience!
A few years ago I was given permission to photograph the sheep handlers working the release pen at the Meeker International Sheepdog Trials. It was fascinating! I watched as the border collies and cowboys and horses wrangled the unruly Meeker sheep, gathering them, penning them, and releasing them for each sheepdog participating in the trials. Working the Release Pen won the People’s Choice award at the 2006 Meeker Classic International Art Contest.
My sister lives at the other end of the valley from me. Her views are beautifully pastoral and her home looks across this gorgeous meadow. It’s lovely in all seasons. In the winter it fills with Canada geese, in the spring it turns a magnificent chartreuse as the field begins to grow. This piece was painted in the middle of June, when the valley seems to sing with happiness!

It was a long winter. My beloved Dad died, after a difficult final battle. The weather was atypically cold and dreary. The eldercare for both of my parents was, at times, exhausting. During that time, I would look through my photo library for inspiration; any kind of inspiration. I did find inspiration there, in old photos of more lighthearted times, photos of our children when they were young and carefree, bucolic summer vacations, and photos of the wildlife I love so much. There was one particular photo, though, that stood out and I knew it was time to paint my version of it. The photograph depicted an old hand and his horse, at the end of a hard day. Both were weary and ready for rest. The long light of late afternoon shafted across a meadow and illuminated both of them in soft, bright warmth. Their quiet, trusting relationship was evident. At the end of a long, hard day, they had each other.

What's more fun for a lover of equine art than painting a beautiful horse in all of its wild beauty? Maybe painting the horse, and then embellishing the background with bright colors and abstract details and a variety of glazes! I hope that all of the fun I had painting this piece shows through!

I love painting the Meeker Sheepdog Trials. At the far end of the competition field the sheep wranglers release the sheep at the beginning of each run. That’s what this painting depicts. I love the colors of northern Colorado in autumn; brilliant sun on yellow fields, blue mountains, clear skies… Colorado at it’s most rare and beautiful!

This has been my year of painting the things that fill my soul with loveliness and beauty. The photo reference I used for this painting is one I took up in Kalispell a few years ago. It WAS the end of a long June day, and everyone was tired and ready to go home and call it a day. As the sun was setting and the hands were chatting quietly, these two horses reached out to one another with a nuzzle, and nickered softly. It was all perfectly beautiful.

There’s a canyon above our home where a steam runs only for a few days each year. The stream drops in a beautiful waterfall right beneath the spot from where this piece is painted.
