The canyons in Lake Powell are full of wonder and mystery. My husband and I were floating back from Davis Gulch and this blue heron followed our course for a while, perching on rocks and observing as we drifted by. Beautiful day; beautiful memory.

I began the first as a way to use up old paint on my palette and scraps of linen that I didn't feel like stretching. I fell in love with allowing myself to paint with more imagination and zero stress. These paintings don't have to look like anything other than what they are. Plus, for me, Raven has powerful magic.

Western landscapes are suffused with light; light from different angles, light filtered by particulates, light obscured by quickly moving clouds. When I looked at this landscape I was enamored by the juxtaposition of greenish sky and red rock and soil. Every color seemed to be bouncing off of something else. Oh joy!

Wildlife Painting,Pelicans, Snake River “Pelican Pair at Oxbow Bend” by Colorado Artist Nancee Jean Busse, Painter of the American West

Most American artists and photographers know that Oxbow Bend on the Snake River in Grand Teton National Park is breathtakingly beautiful. It also provides a spectacular opportunity for wildlife viewing. This pair of pelicans was perfectly highlighted in a deeply shaded spot along the bank. My photograph of them was surprisingly good (I'm a lousy photographer--always clicking the shutter a fraction of a second too late) and working on this painting was really, really, fun.

These gorgeous, elegant gladiolas graced my home for just under a week. I had to paint them! I painted this still life in warm, summertime sunset colors.
