Art by Oklahoma Abstract Contemporary Equine Artist Jonelle T. McCoy

© "Fire Run"

Every year that I put together my art calendar collection, I try to have a month or two with a surprise painting not yet released to the public. This year was no different, and I am now introducing this years surprise- "Fire Run".  My signature equine form here has been laid out as a dimensional raised lines and I've used acrylic texture mediums to further give this horse impact and visual interest.

"Fire Run" features a handsome paso fino with bright and contrasting teal and turquoise hair against a rich and vibrant reddish orange atmosphere of a massive blaze. There are three other horses in the background running out towards the main horse and viewer just behind some brush that is also in the cool contrasting blue/greens. There is plenty of energy in this painting, but it is not over the top. Though concerned, the focal horse has a confidence in his eye that lends a feeling of grounded faith, that there is hope, that there is a power to trust in to get through the crisis.

I have a tendancy to panic and/or get wound up when pushed or faced with elements in my life that I can't control- the demanding pressures that I have to deal with occasionally. In that state of inner turmoil and chaos I sometimes forget that there is a higher power that watches over me to give me trust and faith that I will get through it.

I am the type who's nerves can fire off explosievly in stressful situations. How do you handle stress? Are you the leader who can remain calm and take charge reassuring others? Or are you the type like me that needs to be grounded and brought back to rationality?

"Fire Run" has already sold, and will be moving to Canada in 2015. I invite you to sign up for my newsletter to have updates and to stay in touch, find the sign up on my home page www.jonellemccoy.com  Thank you!

© "We Three Kings"

It's Christmas eve when I'm writing this, but I wish you all who see this on December 25th a very Merry Christmas!
What is it you're excited about with Christmas? Santa's arrival? Giving gifts, receiving gifts, family, all the lovely lights and decorations? All or in part? Or is it the celebration of the child king Christ's birth? This painting was done stemming from a memory in my childhood. My father was artistic but didn't pursue it as passionately as I do, but he still showed his talent from time to time. We painted the living room window a couple times with wonderful holiday street scenes and you know who did the carriage horses. Ah, that was so wonderful. But that's not the memory I speak of here. We were Roman Catholics, and a nativity scene was always a part of our decorations. These figurines were set up with the manger in front of a two panel watercolor panorama of the Christmas Star of shining down. That star and it's light has never left my mind. It's part of what makes up my thoughts of Christmas. So here is my memory spoken with my voice. "We Three Kings", three golden horses in a field are bathed in the City of Bethlehem's starlight, and they are well aware of it's beauty. Painted with acrylics on a 12"x16"x1.5" gallery wrap.
Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Original Western Landscape Painting "Working The Release Pen" by Artist Nancee Jean Busse, Painter of the American West

A few years ago I was given permission to photograph the sheep handlers working the release pen at the Meeker International Sheepdog Trials. It was fascinating! I watched as the border collies and cowboys and horses wrangled the unruly Meeker sheep, gathering them, penning them, and releasing them for each sheepdog participating in the trials. Working the Release Pen won the People’s Choice award at the 2006 Meeker Classic International Art Contest.

Original Colorado Landscape Painting With Horse, Rider Sheep and Dog , "High Country" by Painter of the American West Nancee Jean Busse

I love painting the Meeker Sheepdog Trials. At the far end of the competition field the sheep wranglers release the sheep at the beginning of each run. That’s what this painting depicts. I love the colors of northern Colorado in autumn; brilliant sun on yellow fields, blue mountains, clear skies… Colorado at it’s most rare and beautiful!

Down southeast of me is the lovely island of Puerto Rico, a place I have heard much about, hope to someday visit, and a home of the breed I love, the Paso Fino.

I was commissioned by a resident there to paint his wife's mare Stefania. A gorgeous dappled gray mare, she has kindness in her soul and the brio in her heart for giving her all to please. I envisioned this mare with her 1st place blue ribbons waving in the breeze along with her mane, forelock and tail as she paraded around showing it off. As requested, there are hearts in the painting (for the brio), and the color blue (for the top honor), which worked perfectly with my vision of the finest. Turquoise was the favored predominate background color and Stefania has a reddish gold veined turquoise stone behind her and on her sash adding to the drama and finesse of the paintings theme.

Done in acrylics with texture medium to accentuate her pretty dapples, this portrait is 30"x40"x1.5" on gallery wrap canvas.

© "Wintertime (The Sleigh Horse)"

I have always liked the sweep of lines in this one, the energy and definite chill and

cold freshness of winter it gives. An invigorating remembrance of a sleigh ride in

Canada when I was very little, we were visiting my Nana's family dairy farm. Biggest

snowflakes I'd ever seen. Dad wore a black bear skin coat. Our legs were covered

with a blanket. It was so cold but it was wonderful! It's a memory that will stay with

me forever.

Original Colorado Landscape Painting With Sheep "October Afternoon At The Redlands"by Colorado Western Landscape Painter Nancee Jean Busse

This view of the Colorado National Monument is from old Hwy 340 from Grand Junction to Fruita, Colorado. Three years ago, this painting was juried into an art show in Fort Collins, Colorado. It was a well-respected show; one that requires participating artists to pay a “handler” to ensure that their paintings were delivered from the shipping facility to show, back again, and then shipped back to the artists. When my painting never came home to me, I inquired and found that it had been lost. No tracking number existed and no one was willing to take responsibility. I was mad, sad, and all that other stuff, but let it go and moved on. Two years later, on Christmas Eve day, the painting showed up at my front door, in it’s original shipping box! So, it’s home now, hanging in my studio, wishing for a new home…

As most of the United States knows, we have a very early deep cold that's moved in- as I write this on the eve of November 10th, it hit about 10 PM, it was like a punch it hit the side of the house so hard. I had ridden one of my paso fino's earlier when it was 75 outside, T-shirt weather, now I will have to wear hat, down coat, gloves and scarf. Brrrrrrr! So to match the weather, I'm showing off my acrylic painting "Absolute Zero".

Equine Art, Wild Horse Painting,"The Wild One" by Nancee Jean Busse ,Painter of the American West

I photographed a horse roundup outside of Cortez in May. There was one horse who simply wouldn't behave! She was everywhere she wasn't supposed to be, in spite of every attempt to wrangle her into going along with the herd. She simply ran for the pleasure of running, even if it was in cloud of the cowboy's curses! I liked her! I'll paint her again!

© "My H'art Leapt"

I found these small heart shaped canvases at my favorite art supply store, and I immediately knew I would enjoy painting little equines on them. They are made of very stiff pressed cardboard that is about 1/8th inch thick and have canvas on both sides. They are within a 5 1/2" square measurement in size flat. I create these with my line style in acrylics. I call them my Horse H'art Series, and I try to incorporate the word h'art in the titles, sometimes as it is spelled as part of a word, sometimes used phonetically. In the coming weeks as we get closer to Christmas I will be starting to have giveaways for my fans and collectors, and there will be some H'arts in the mix. © "Once Again"

I have been sharing with you the progression of the WIP painting "Once Again", and I finally have the finished painting to share with you. Unlike my flat lines paintings, the lines in this one are dimensional, and there is added acrylic based texture mediums added for further depth. Depending on how this painting is lit, will give it a slight difference in how it looks. It's slight, but interesting. I had so enjoyed doing this technique on another painting that I've definitely decided that this approach will be a part of my creations. "Once Again" has been painted with acrylics on a 16"x20"x1.5" gallery wrap canvas. It is available. Contact me for more info.

 © "Beginnings"

I have been working on painting with the approach of my line technique somewhat opposite of my usual, instead of flat lines, this new way of creating uses texture and raised lines to bring to life my imaginative horses. Doing something new can be an enriching experience, or it can be daunting. I find the new path interesting, and inspiring. There is a spiritual energy that guides my efforts, and this painting evolved to show that relationship between myself and the canvas, and between the subjects in the painting and the viewer. Since trying this new way is somewhat in it's infancy, it's a new beginning, and the painting subject is also a new beginning, therefore I named it "Beginnings" for the mare with the new generation at her side. Her foal looks to her for guidance, support, love and acceptance, and she in kind radiates that loving energy all around and behind and above them both. The rays of white light shine down on the pair. "Beginnings" is acrylic texture and paint on a 24"x20"x1.5" gallery wrap canvas. It is available for purchase. Contact me for more info.

© "BeCome a Survivor"

Last year I was commissioned by a fine lady who enjoys the paso fino breed like I do, to create an equine painting that depicted the will to fight and the hope for a cure for her breast cancer diagnosis. I painted this 8"x8"x1.5" gallery wrap acrylic with the horse looking forward and upwards, for belief that she would be ok, that she would beat this illness. I chose blues for a calming of frazzled nerves and pink for the passion that a hopeful fight brings. The horse is adorned with the signature pink ribbons that is symbolic of the breast cancer awareness in it's mane and hair that also sweeps up in the same direction as the horses steady and strong upward gaze, and there are some ribbons that can't be seen painted in the sides. I'm happy to report she is doing great- and I can only hope that this can be true for all women who face this devastating health crisis. I feel very blessed that my recent mammogram was clean and clear, I pray someday that this is the case for all women! Please feel free to share my blog to bring awareness to others. Thank you!
PS I hope you noticed in the title of the painting my use of the capital letters B&C in become to signify Breast Cancer Survivor.

A muse. What is that exactly? The definition I find and like in part is as follows: a woman, or a force personified as a woman, who is the source of inspiration for a creative artist." I kind of like that, a muse has a feminine persona and influence. But, what if the source of my inspiration is of male gender? I still believe it's the intuitive nature of being a woman that shapes it and drives it. My muse is our Paso Fino stallion Adonis. That's not his registered name, but the one we gave him, his barn name. It's unquestionably perfect for him, he is a golden god. The camera loves him, my husband loves him, I love him and my canvases love him. So I'm sharing with you a photo of when we first got him. His mane was partially rubbed out, we didn't even know he had 4 white anklets since he was living in a tiny pen full of mud. His beauty astounded us and he's never failed to make us regret having him. Powerful, yet kind, sensitive, intelligent. Though all male, he is this woman artists muse.

Colorado Mountain Landscape Dog Painting "A Dog You Can Count On" by Colorado Artist Nancee Jean Busse, Painter of the American West

The Meeker Sheepdog Trials is an annual event held in northern Colorado each year. Working Border Collies and their handlers come from all over the world to compete for a grand prize. I painted this for the art competition associated with the event. I love the event and I love border collies!

These are part of the Summer of 2014 60 series that weren't claimed, and with these, the gift keeps on giving since I donate $8 of each sale to horse rescue efforts.
